Ever play one of the Super Mario Maker games and wonder what it would be like to take the same concept to other games? Maybe even the 2D Legend of Zeldas? Well, the developers over at FIRECHICK thought that would be a good idea too, and they decided to do something about it. Enter Super Dungeon Maker, an upcoming title from FIRECHICK and Rokaplay.

Super Dungeon Maker looks to be pretty much exactly what you’d imagine given the base concept. Players can create dungeons made up of a series of rooms, fill them with enemies, traps, items, and bosses, then upload them online for other players to playthough. Leaderboards for each dungeon will be included tracking both time it took to clear the dungeon as well as completion rate, and dungeon creators will be able to receive feedback from players in some form or another. FIRECHICK also promises a straight forward user interface that just about anyone should be able to use. All this AND you get to trot around endless player created dungeons as an adorable chicken.

Based on the trailer I would say Super Dungeon Maker probably draws the most inspiration from Link’s Awakening and Oracle of Ages/Seasons titles in the Zelda series. Now, I suppose Nintendo did sort of explore this concept themselves in one of the options features in the Switch release of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. In my own playthrough, I didn’t spend much time with this feature and kind of didn’t get it, to be honest, so let’s hope Super Dungeon Maker will be a little more straightforward and fully featured.

Super Dungeon Master enters Steam Early Access February 15th, and is expected to fully launch on Steam, as well as Nintendo Switch, later this year.

Ever wondered what it would be like to play a Zelda-inspired level editor like Super Mario Maker? Wonder no more, as independent developer FIRECHICK boldly answers the question with Super Dungeon Maker, an adorable 2D pixel art dungeon-crawler-meets-level-designer mash-up launching on Steam Early Access on February 15, 2022, and coming to Nintendo Switch later this year.

In Super Dungeon Maker, you will design and create your very own pixel art-style dungeons of varying themes and difficulties, then share them with the community. Creativity knows no bounds here, as you can use as many levels, enemies, items, and bosses in your dungeon creations as you wish. Once you’ve hit a “creative block” worry not — you can play a near-infinite number of imaginative, clever dungeons made by other creators from all over the world while leveraging competitive statistics like World Record Time and Completion Rates.

While Super Dungeon Maker doesn’t sport a “traditional” single-player campaign, its story goes like this: long ago, when the bird goddess created the land, she left behind mysterious eggs containing magical artifacts that her disciples would use to enrich their lives for generations. To honor and protect these artifacts, the ancient birds built great temples and dungeons. Over time, the knowledge of the artifacts was lost; however, new generations carried on the tradition of building new dungeons and exploring old ones. In the game, you’ll take on the role of Fink, a small yet brave chicken whose courage instills in them the honorable task of clearing dungeons and creating new ones — should the occasion call for it.

Key Features of Super Dungeon Maker Include:

  • DM Extraordinaire: In the dungeon, your creative prowess is limitless; place as many enemies, floors, secret paths, perilous traps, special items, and hidden objects as your heart desires. Just remember: the reward makes it worthwhile, but the challenge is what keeps them coming back.
  • A Dungeon of Pure Imagination: With so many ways to customize dungeons, there’s no telling where you’ll get swept off to! Careful dungeon design means not only well-placed traps and enemies, but enchanting environments, too! Choose between dungeon biomes like forest, desert, and castle — or even complex combinations of them all!
  • Accessible Adventuring: Unlike other level editors and sandbox games with significant learning curves, Super Dungeon Maker is optimized for both controller and mouse + keyboard play, making it easy for anyone of any skill level to jump in and start creating. Its simplistic UI and easy-to-learn instructions make Super Dungeon Maker an easy choice for fledgling creators and pro designers alike.
  • Dungeons Anonymous: Once you’ve unleashed your deadly dungeons upon the world, it’s advised to collect feedback from your victims…erm…players…in order to perfect them and keep them of the highest quality. Earn a reputation and keep adventurers coming back to your divine creations!

Super Dungeon Maker, winner of the “Best Family Game” Award at Gamescom 2021, will be available on Steam Early Access on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. The game will launch on Nintendo Switch later this year. To learn more about the game and its development, visit its official website.
