This month, Nintendo Switch crossed a milestone by topping the lifetime sales of PlayStation 4 (original and slim models) in Japan. Nintendo’s hybrid console now sits at 6.67 million units sold compared to PS4’s 6.54 million of both units combined, as shown in the latest MediaCreate sales charts (via Resetera user ACL).

The Switch managed to achieve this sales feat in far less time as well, having been around for purchase since March 3rd, 2017, whereas the original PlayStation 4 model has been available in Japan since February 14th, 2014. The Slim model launched in mid-2016 as a replacement for the base model.

In other MediaCreate news, all three of Nintendo’s 2018 holiday releases for the Switch snagged the Top 3 spots among software ending the week of December 23rd (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Party, and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!/Eevee! in that order). The major new release for the week, Dragon Quest Builders 2, claimed the fourth (PS4) and fifth place (Switch) spots respectively.

The PlayStation 4 family, with the PS4 Pro factored in, still outranks the Switch overall at 7.5 million units, but the with a milestone like this, the Switch is in a healthy place going into its third year on the market.
