Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch

The NPD Group reports that Nintendo Switch sold the most hardware across January 2018 in the U.S., moving more units than the PS4 and Xbox One. However, Sony’s PlayStation 4 did generate the most revenue for the month, through the combination of regular and PS4 Pro and PS VR sales. All three consoles did experience healthy sales overall, with the difference in revenue between the top seller and third-best seller being 3 percent.

Despite being behind Sony’s box, the Xbox One platform did have its best January on record, NPD confirmed. Nintendo 3DS, now in its 7th year, also had its best January sales since 2013 with the highest unit sales in any January on record. Speaking to January sales, hardware revenue turned out the highest dollar sales since January 2011. Over 1 million units across all platforms were sold in the US, and sales were up 119 percent from the same month a year before.

Monster Hunter World | Fifth Fleet

As for software, Monster Hunter World topped the NPD charts for January 2018, with Dragon Ball FighterZ following close behind. Both games were available on PS4 and Xbox One, with the former getting a PC port later this year. Monster Hunter World alone shipped 5 million units worldwide in its first weekend. This contrasts with multiple past Januarys where the Call of Duty franchise tops the post-holiday period. Despite this, Call of Duty: WWII is the best-selling game over the last 12 month period, moving more units than any other U.S. game release over three months.
