Episode 17: Sushi, Photos, and Rivals

Welcome back to another episode of Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash!

Today we finally reach the end of the paradise episodes! That’s right, today we tackle the final three peeks into the girls of Senran Kagura’s PBS life.

First up is Yomi, who finds herself captured by a bearded Yagyuu and tasked to save the “Sushi Queen” along with Hibari and Minori.

Second is Shiki who can equate all the swimsuited beauties with only one thing: blog hits.

Finally, we check in with the galactic hero herself Daidōji as she demands to know once for all what matters more to Rin. Master Kiriya or her.

That’s all on this week’s episode of Peach Beach Splash!

We’ve cleared another milestone and to be completely honest thank goodness! I recently finished Cyberdimension Neptunia and have been revisiting Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory and playing Fire Emblem Warriors. I’m amazed at how much more fun I’m having with those titles compared to PBS. But that’s to be expected when a person who doesn’t enjoy shooters that much plays a shooter. Anyway… >_>

First up this time was Yomi, Minori, and Hibari’s quest for the Sushi Queen was actually an interesting premise. Repurposing a Japanese fairytale and putting a Senran Kagura spin on it is certainly fun. The fact that Yomi get’s roped into this works as well since she’s much closer to an audience surrogate than Minori or Hibari. So her reactions certainly make sense. Though of course she can’t help but work in bean sprouts somehow. Also for those curious Hibari, Minori, and Yomi were all born in February. Out next tale was, of course, Shiki, who has learned nothing apparently since the last time she tried to spice up her blog.

That’s honestly what bugs me about this side story. It rehashes an older plot and assumes Shiki has forgotten what happened last time she did this. Then again, she didn’t go after Mirai so maybe she did learn something at least. I like Shiki as a character, I really do. But I’d like to see the writing team do something else with her. Finally, we have Daidōji.

Ah, Daidōji. A character whom I absolutely love due to how over the top and just plain awesome she is. The conflict here is one that’s been a long time coming.

You see while Shinovi Versus was about Daidōji finally graduating and Estival Versus was about Daidōji’s quest to become more feminine, Peach Beach Splash finally asks what’s more important to Rin. Her rivalry with Daidōji, who refused to graduate Hanzō until she returned, or her love for Kiriya? It’s a great conflict on the surface, but peel back the layers and have a pretty complex situation.

See, Daidōji isn’t necessarily in love with Rin. her eternal quest for strength is more important than romance. Thus with Rin being ber rival, Rin is the most important thing to her. In Rin’s case, she respects Daidōji as a rival and values her as a close friend. But she is in love with Kiriya. So asking her to choose presents an interesting dilemma since it’s not a “Who do you love more” question. Instead, it’s a “what value is more important”. Is it strength or love? We’ll just have to see if the Senran Kagura team ever address it, but I think it could make for a great side-story.
