While the Nintendo Direct today started with the big guns, namely Pokemon, it then moved on to smaller, more quirky titles, which I appreciate. On the 3DS front, the two that stood out to me were Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions and the latest Professor Layton title, Layton’s Mystery Journey, featuring his daughter.
On the Mario & Luigi front, there was talk of amiibo functionality, which when utilized with the game will unlock stamp sheets, which can be used in both the main game and the minion side game to unlock new items when the game launches in early October. Also exciting was that two new amiibo will herald the release of the game, that of classic Bowser minions, Goomba and Koopa Troopa.
As for Professor Layton, the seventh game in the series looks to play it safe stylistically, though it will apparently feature some new quirks, such as playing dress up with Layton’s adorable daughter, Katrielle. I’m happy to see the series isn’t dead quite yet, and hope that I have as much fun investigating with Layton’s child as I did with the good professor.
Both Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires Conspiracy are slated to release for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017.
