There are a lot of things I associate with Nintendo. Jumping plumbers, family friendly chaos and innovative design. What I don’t typically associate with them is Football. American Football, that is, not to be confused with the far more intense Futbol. The reason I bring this up is because this weekend, Nintendo is using perhaps the biggest marketing opportunity, the Super Bowl, to show off both their new console, the Nintendo Switch, as well as the new Zelda, Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Slated to release during the 4th Quarter, the 30 second ad will feature everyone’s favorite yelling green elf showing off his style in Breath of the Wild. There is also a 90 second ad that you can see right now, which I will put at the end of this article. I think this shows how very invested Nintendo is in the Switch, and perhaps how much they have riding on the new system. I fervently hope it’s a success, and that it has a diverse, eclectic and fun roster of games that beggars the small sample available on the Wii U.

Joy-Con and Switch (Tablet Mode)

Are you planning on watching the ad live during the Super Bowl? If so, chime in below in the comments section, and let us know how excited you are, or aren’t, for Nintendo’s latest system. Also, let us know which games you can’t wait to play!

About Josh Speer

Josh Speer is addicted to two things in equal measure : Books and Videogames. He has a degree from the University of Washington in English with an emphasis on writing. He joined Operation Rainfall last year while following it on Facebook. His two giant life goals are to write his own series of fantasy / science fiction novels and to get into the creative side of the video game industry. He is beyond pleased to now have his proverbial foot in the door thanks to the opportunity provided by Oprainfall!

  • Panpopo

I’m not interested in the super bowl, but I’m not their target audience for this ad. This is to get awareness for casual gamers that this thing is coming out, because I can guarantee outside hardcore gamers and Nintendo fans, the awareness is not there.

Let’s hope it is a success. Also the games I want to play are not out for a while, like Xenoblade. I also want to play ARMS since it looks like Virtual On.

  • This is a really good idea for Nintendo. The Superbowl has people who watch it just for the funny (questionable) commercials, and there are millions of people who watch it every year. Unfortunately, it’s going to make it even harder to order a Switch.

Also, fuck the Patriots. Just sayin’
