Sonic the Hedgehog

According to Famitsu, Sega is going to be removing Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from the Wii Shop Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade on Friday October 30th. This means that if you want to get them, now is your very last chance! While, there is no direct confirmation, the removal of these games from Wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade is expected to be a global move by Sega, not something that is only happening in Japan.

It should also be noted that both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 have enhanced versions available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop, should you happen to have a Nintendo 3DS in your collection.

This brings us to the question of why Sega would be doing this in the first place. An obvious answer would be that perhaps they are preparing to release the enhanced versions on these platforms. If not, then there wouldn’t seem to be all that much point in removing the games from the online shops on these systems.

Either way, you may want to grab these games before they’re pulled off of these platforms and become unavailable, especially if you’re a fan of them. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the franchises that I grew up with, along with other big names like Mario, Metroid, and Zelda. I played the Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games quite a lot back in those carefree days. Hopefully this move is in preparation for bringing the enhanced versions of these games to the Wii U and Xbox One platforms, but for now, all we can do is hope this is the case and wait to see what Sega does next.

Michael is a veteran gamer in his late 30s, who grew up around video games, with fond memories of the oldies like the NES, SNES, and N64 among others. He loves Nintendo, but also plays a lot of games on his PC. Michael also enjoys going for walks/bike rides, loves animals, and enjoys thunderstorms (and science in general). I love Nintendo but I also play a lot of game's on PC, many of which are on steam. My favorite Nintendo game's include Zelda, Metroid, and Smash Bros to name a few. On PC I love the Half-Life games, as well as most all of the Source Engine games just to name a few.
