For those of you who still haven’t played this incredibly creepy game, now’s your chance. As part of this week’s Midweek Madness sale, Steam is letting you grab a free copy of Amesia: The Dark Descent. At the time of this writing, you have just over 19 hours left to grab your free copy. This is one of those rare extra-awesome deals. Having played the entire game myself, I can tell you that it really is that creepy. It uses ambiance and your own imagination to scare you more than cheap jump scares like many other horror games have done. I know what you’re thinking, “but once you’ve beaten the game you know where all the monsters are so it won’t be as scary.” This is true, but the game has a free editor and so there are plenty of custom campaigns available online to play through as well.
Once a lot of time has passed, you’ll have forgotten the exact locations of most of the monsters in the official campaign so you’ll be able to play that again, with the fear. Of course you could always take things up a notch and play Amnesia: The Dark Descent in a virtual reality headset instead of just on your computer screen. I’ve never done that as I don’t have such a headset, but it would certainly put you more deeply into the incredibly creepy world of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It is one of the creepiest game’s I’ve played, and I like that it doesn’t just rely heavily on jump scares as some games have done.
