Fans waiting for Phantasy Star Online 2 to release on Playstation 4 outside of Japan may recall July 2012, when Sega announced plans to bring the several versions of the game to areas outside of Japan in early 2013. When March of 2013 came around, they said the game was delayed and continued to be very quiet about it. The answer was the same in 2014 when Kotaku asked Sega about the game’s status. It’s now 2015, with another year gone and still no sign of Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to regions outside of Japan. On Friday, a Sega representative told Kotaku “SEGA is currently not planning to release the PS4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan,”
This comes as a very bitter pill to swallow for fans who had been waiting and holding off on importing the Japanese version of the game, because they thought it would release outside of Japan, too. It’s made even worse by the fact that Phantasy Star Online 2 is not a game that is stuck in development. It has been completed for years now, but fans outside of Japan have just been repeatedly shrugged off by Sega with the simple answer that the game is delayed. With Sega finally admitting that the game is not coming to PlayStation 4 systems outside of Japan, some fans are outraged while others had simply started to expect that this might happen.
The PlayStation 4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 may be dead in the water for those outside of Japan, but there is as yet no word on the other versions that were promised back in Sega’s 2012 announcement for the game. Sega has been quiet about those versions for years as well. Whether or not they will meet with the same fate remains to be seen, but Sega has not treated their fans very well in this case.
