pokken-tournament

In a move that will surprise no one a recent interview with The Pokemon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara and Katsuhiro Harada of Namco sat down for an interview where they discussed the new game Pokken Tournament and yes they are in fact considering it for Western release.

“I think the possibility definitely exists,” Ishihara said. “Basically, as an arcade game we would like to push the boundaries of combining familiar Pokémon characters with new and unexpected ones in battle. We want to show people different kinds of Pokémon characters that they can actually use.”

It’s unsurprising. Pokken Tournament is a rather ambitious game, meant to give players direct control of Pokemon. Being headed by Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada also means that we can probably expect a fairly intricate system.

The interview also discussed the challenges that the developers faced in making a game that would be under the scrutiny of longtime fans, as well as the difficulty of competing against the smartphone game market.
