Video Game Hall of Fame Class of 2015

Ladies and Gentlemen, Meet the 2015 World Video Game Hall of Fame Class

The Strong National Museum of Play has officially announced the Inaugural World Video Game Hall of Fame Class. Six games made it into the Hall of Fame from a list of 15 finalists. The Inaugural World Video Game Hall of Fame Class is as follows:

  • Super Mario Bros
  • Pac-Man
  • Tetris
  • Doom
  • Pong
  • World of Warcraft

This class is a good beginning class for the Hall of Fame as it contains six games that not only entertained people around the world, but also made a historical and cultural impact around the world. Going with mostly classics and one modern game was a fair selection. The first class is always the hardest to choose for a Hall of Fame.

Are you satisfied with the Strong National Museum of Play’s first six choices into the World Video Game Hall of Fame? What games do you believe deserve to be in the Hall in the future? ¬†Share us your thoughts below.

These are some of the games I expect to get into the Hall of Fame in the future: Persona 4, Super Metroid, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy VII, Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue, Crash Bandicoot, Halo, and The Sims. Of course, there are many more candidates than this group, but its a good start.

Why the heck World of Warcraft?

    • JDobbs

There are two reasons why World of Warcraft got in. #1. The Hall needed one modern game so it is considered to be credible. #2. It popularized MMORPGS and made an impact on both the industry and with the public. Its the oddball out of the six, but it made an impact for its era just as the other inductees made an impact during their own time.

Well, it’s to MMORPGs what Pac-Man was to arcade games. Not the first, but it exploded the market beyond what anyone thought was possible (The current install base of WoW is about 100x what people thought the upper limit was for an MMORPG before it came out).

The common thread tying these games together seems to be their lasting effect on the market and industry. Pong caused video games to catch on in the first place. Pac-Man caused a cultural explosion, where even people who weren’t gamers began to know about it. Super Mario Bros. brought console gaming back from the point of extinction. Tetris got people hooked on handheld gaming. Doom spawned the massive first-person-shooter genre, and WoW exploded the MMORPG market.

I honestly think Pokemon should have been inducted this time, but I wasn’t even aware of this hall of fame existing at all, so… yeah.

Anyway, I can’t really find a reason to object to any of the entries here, as they all carry cultural significance, and definitely kicked off some major trends in gaming.

I predict Pokemon gets in next year. It was one of the 15 finalists this year.
