One other important area of the office I would like to talk about is the collection box. Here, you can trade coins you obtain from battles and from the field for unlockables. You can get game CG, new hairstyles / eye colors, and unlock new costumes for creation. You can also trade dropped items in for other items in case you need something different for item creation. Coins are also used to unlock transferable items and stats for your next playthrough.

After you’ve equipped yourself, you’re ready to take on some missions. There are two types of missions, story missions you will take from the console in the office and side quests you can take from people in the town. These are all about the same format, get X item, slay X monster or perform a certain skill in combat. Side quests will only be available for a limited time, so make sure you complete all of them before turning in the story missions. While this serves its function of moving the story forward, it is very simple and, unfortunately, the weakest part of the game.

Now that we have taken some missions, it’s time to hit the field. You move from place to place via a simple menu. Once you select where you want to go, you can then pick where you want to start at on each map, provided you have explored them enough to activate the warp points. Like I said before, some of these maps are very large, and you will make use of these warp points quite often. Certain areas of the map will not be accessible to start with, however. Each of your maidens has a field skill that will help open up all the different areas. For example, Otoha can dispel barriers, while Nene can activate consoles to open doors. These skills will level up as you complete side quests.

The combat really is the best part of this one. It will seem really complicated at first since there is a lot of different things to learn about, but it’s really pretty simple. First off, when you attack, you will notice several different colored bars on the ground. This shows your effective attack range. Each weapon and skill has a different range, so you will want to choose what works best depending on where you enemy is. You will also notice that each character will have an action count by their name. This is how many attacks they can take on that turn. This number increases as your character gains more proficiency with their equipped weapon. As you level and gain proficiency, you will earn points you can use in Disc Analysis to teach them new skills. While gaining a level nets you a few points, gaining a level in weapon proficiency will get you a lot more.

You will also notice a meter in bottom-right corner of the screen called the Voltage Meter. Think of this as a special attack meter. You will need to fill this in order to use the maidens’ special moves and active Live Concert Mode. You will need at least a Level 1 Voltage Meter to use Live Concert Mode. The more meter you use, the longer it will last. You will get a big increase in stats and have various effects on the battle depending on how you set it up. You can have it to where you do more damage or take less damage, decrease your wait time between moves and much more. You will also notice requests for certain actions at the top of the screen during this mode. If you complete these, it will unlock more dances for you to use in PVS. Just be careful not to get your clothing damaged or let your Voltage Meter hit zero, or the mode will end early.

Harmonics Mode in combat will allow all of your characters to take their turns together. You will have to check the turn order on the right side of the screen to make sure the girls’ turns are all together before activating this mode. All five of them do not have to be together, but whomever is not will not be included in the attack. When you combine all their turns together, you can perform what is known as a Combo Skill. This where two more of gals combine their skills together for a bigger move. These will rack up a lot of hits and damage quickly. You can check an example of this from my video below:

Overall, I thought this was a really solid outing for Compile Heart on the PS4. While the mission structure is a bit Plain Jane, the rest of the game makes up for it. It took me around 45 hours to get the normal ending. I’m still not 100% sure how to get the True Ending since, as with other titles from this developer, it is not always made clear, but I am looking forward to another run to find all the goodies I missed. If you’re a fan of Compile Heart or are craving a good JRPG for your PS4, at the $59.99 price tag, I think you will be more than satisfied.

Steve started with oprainfall not long after the campaign moved from the IGN forums to Facebook. Ever since, he has been fighting to give all non-mainstream RPGs a fair voice. As the site admin, he will continue to do this and even show there is value in what some would deem "pure ecchi." He loves niche games and anime more than anything... well, except maybe Neptune.
