The Vagrant | oprainfall

The Vagrant is a fantasy-themed 2D side scrolling brawler with gorgeous artwork and animation that recalls some of Vanillaware’s finest moments, such as Princess Crown, Murasama: The Demon Blade, Odin Sphere and especially 2013’s superb Dragon’s Crown. In fact, Chinese developer OTK Games states at the top of the Kickstarter page that they were directly inspired by Vanillaware to make The Vagrant. The story is about three adventurers who find themselves in the mystical land of Mythrillia together. Each of them is on a personal quest and there is little doubt they’ll find their goals aligning as they fight against the many monsters inhabiting the land to reach their own truths.

The devs promise that Mythrillia’s four regions, each with a hundred areas to play in, will each have unique enemies to face. Additionally there will be magical pets to help you in your struggle and a loot system for upgrading your characters. Potions and food will come into play during battles as well. Also, there will be a town where you can buy and sell goods and talk to NPCs in order to learn more information about the game and the world. It is likely that the town will also provide numerous side quests to keep the action going. Check out the trailer for The Vagrant below.

As one can see from the preview, the game is heavily stylized and bears a striking resemblance to the Vanillaware aesthetic, right down to the over-exaggerated character designs to the beautifully detailed art, the fluid animation style and even the dramatic music. The fans seem to be really enjoying what they’ve seen so far because the game has already been Greenlit by the community at Steam. The Vagrant is slated for release on PC and Mac, but a launch date hasn’t been confirmed yet. Let’s hope for a 2015 release!
