As you may know, Re-Logic announced their follow-up to Terraria last month. The original announcement of Terraria: Otherworld was scarce on details, but today there is new information and a new Game Developers’ Conference 2015 trailer (above) for the game. Terraria‘s follow-up has no specific release date beyond a vague “2015.” We will have to wait a long while yet before we can get our hands on the game. So, what is Terraria: Otherworld?

Set in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe, Terraria: Otherworld places the player in a life-and-death struggle to restore a once-pristine world – now overrun by a malevolent force that has corrupted nature itself – to its original splendor. Along with a rag-tag band of survivors, will you be able to successfully harness the power of an array of weaponry, magic, defenses, and even the world itself to thwart the designs of this unseen evil?

Combining the sandbox gameplay experience with role-playing and strategy elements, Terraria: Otherworld explores the Terraria experience in an innovative and unique way – providing a fresh approach to the “open world” genre.

"These Wartowers can have a wide range of different weapons and defenses but are not self-powered. They need to be built in the vicinity of a Purifying Tower to get power from the Crystal."
“These Wartowers can have a wide range of different weapons and defenses, but are not self-powered. They need to be built in the vicinity of a Purifying Tower to get power from the Crystal.”

Terraria: Otherworld takes the Terraria formula and adds in some new ingredients like “strategy and role playing” elements, as well as a story that gives the player a purpose for being in this world. Your purpose in this new world is that you will be “pushing back the Corruption until it is no more.” You will have to find or craft Purification Towers and activate them to accomplish this feat. Of course, that alone might be too easy. So, you will need to defend your towers, too. On the other hand, if you’d like to just explore and build freely, it sounds like you can still do that, as well.

The game will allow you to level up various weapon skills the more you use those weapons. At the same time, Terraria: Otherworld aims to retain the open-ended nature of the original game. This also means that the story elements in the game won’t be linear, which is nice. Other additions to the game are skill trees, and NPCs will do more than simply stand around dumbly until the player wants to buy something. Michael is a veteran gamer in his late 30s, who grew up around video games, with fond memories of the oldies like the NES, SNES, and N64 among others. He loves Nintendo, but also plays a lot of games on his PC. Michael also enjoys going for walks/bike rides, loves animals, and enjoys thunderstorms (and science in general). I love Nintendo but I also play a lot of game's on PC, many of which are on steam. My favorite Nintendo game's include Zelda, Metroid, and Smash Bros to name a few. On PC I love the Half-Life games, as well as most all of the Source Engine games just to name a few.
