ED. UPDATE: What appeared to be an odd story is getting clearer. Square Enix has come out and stated that they are not behind this supposed remake of Mystic Quest.

We are aware of the ‘FINAL FANTASY MYSTIC QUEST HD Remake’ project, and can confirm that it is not a Square Enix project nor endorsed by Square Enix in any way. We take the protection of our IP very seriously, and will be speaking with Dark Design Games to address this matter.

If you put in for a pre-order of the game, we advise you take the proper measures to ensure that you money and identification are safe. We’ll be sure to continue updating this story as more becomes known.

About Louis Polite

Louis is a youthful but old-school gamer from New Jersey who is partially of Japanese descent and he's totally frilly! He's been gaming for practically as long as he's been alive with a early-on fascination for Kid Icarus, with his other favorite franchises being Klonoa, the Tales series, Sonic The Hedgehog, Final Fantasy, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden. He's a total hipster for Nintendo as well appreciating cult classics like Earthbound and Eternal Darkness. His favorite genre is JRPGs, which is an obvious inspiration why he joined the campaign of Operation Rainfall at it's launch. He's a gamer who demands quality and charm out of his games because if he doesn't get it he will let it be known.

  • I’m personally like ????? at this but… I wouldn’t mind picking it up on PC, at least.

  • asdfghj442

I doubt it cost them much, but this is still a waste of resources that could’ve been put towards something more fruitful.

    • Jonah Rosen

Yeah, like a 3D remake of FFV & FFVI. or Maybe 3D remakes of Seiken Densetsu 1-3 (i.e. Final Fantasy Adventure, Secret of Mana and…well, Seiken Densetsu 3.)

    • Jeremy Barnes

This isn’t official. It’s a fan made game.

  • Julian Hardaway

They could’ve taken this opportunity to put voice acting and realistic looking characters in it….. And gotten rid of the stupid battle animations that only have the weapons hitting enemies

    • Stacey Flewelling

Voice acting would have ruined the authentic nature of the game. Having voice acting would have taken away what remaining SNES aura is in the game since there wasn’t any in the original.

    • Jeremy Barnes

It’s a fan made game. One guy. Unlikely he had a great deal of resources.

    • Julian Hardaway

Oh, I see…. well in that case, it’s a fantastic job!

  • multibottler0cket

K but like if the music is remixed with real instruments…

Also why are there four characters in battle?

  • Reven

As someone who owns the programs, that just screams “RPG MAKER” to me. I doubt it’s anything of an official category project, and probably a fan project that is hoping to get a quick buck, and to be honest it doesn’t even look THAT good, having 4 characters in the battle line destroys the original, so it’s no where near the same game. Hell FInal Fantasy Endless Nova felt more like a FF title than this does.

    • Reven

Upon inspection on their website, two of their projects are this and RGSS2, the same language RPG Maker XV uses. They DO list Square as a client, so maybe they do have legit ok to make this, but that loading screen is default RPG Maker, I’d know it anywhere (not that that is a bad thing, To The Moon was made in RPG Maker XP and it’s incredible) but there just seems to be an inconsistency in the graphics, battlers for the villain are sharp and look “HD” in the video while the sprites ooze 16 bit pixelation. Plus the world map… OH MY FREAKING LORD THAT WORLD MAP IS TERRIBLE!

    • Jeremy Barnes

Honestly not sure how people are falling for this being official.

  • Billy Bass

    I’ll buy it!

  • mackenzy kimberley

Well have fun with your copyright infringing game guys unless they have the license for this they cannot sell this. Square has said nothing yet but almost guaranteed this will get shut down.

    • John Sierra

      Square Enix is PUBLISHING it.

    • mackenzy kimberley

We shall see when march arrives that store just looks funny to me. Until it comes on steam i wont hold my breath honestly.

    • Jeremy Barnes

lol, just because the guy says that on his site…doesn’t make it true. He’s taking orders on his site via paypal. No way Square Enix would allow him to take personal orders for a Final Fantasy.

    • mackenzy kimberley

http://kotaku.com/fan-made-final-fantasy-mystic-quest-remake-seems-like-a-1688055419 oh look square enix just denied any involvement point me :3

  • Colin

So many grammatical errors. I feel like this could have been written so much better, especially that final paragraph.

  • Jeremy Barnes

It’s not real. He’s taking orders on his personal site via paypal. No way that would be allowed if it was official.
