Things settled down a bit after two big name releases in last week’s Media Create charts. On hardware, the PS4 came back down to its average levels after experiencing a jump thanks to Destiny. Meanwhile, the 3DS gets an extra nudge upward from Super Smash Bros. as the game solidified itself at the top spot for a second week.

While we’re on the subject of hardware, let’s look at overall numbers. So far this year, overall numbers are over 1.1 million behind last year. The biggest culprit for those numbers is the 3DS, which is down over 1.4 million from last year. And if that 43,000 number holds, the 3DS will have had its yearly sales drop in half from last year.

So, who has a 3DS already in Japan? Well, it would be the social crowd that enjoys Animal Crossing, longtime Nintendo fans that love Mario, Monster Hunters, Dragon Quest fans, Shin Megami Tensei fans, and Pokémaniacs. Which leaves as with a couple of questions:

  • What does Nintendo need to do in order to drive 3DS sales again?
  • With the New 3DS coming out soon, how will that fair, and what will need to be done to help it out?

Smash Bros - Classic Mode | Media Create September 15-21, 2014

Moving to software, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS was the big winner again, topping the 1 million mark in the process. Meanwhile, Yo-kai Watch 2 secured second spot with a 20% increase in sales from last week.

Bayonetta 2 | Media Create September 15-21, 2014

The lone new game in this week’s Top 20 was Bayonetta 2 for Wii U. While it did place in the Top 3, its sales numbers were less than stellar, garnering only 38,828 units sold. Hopefully, the game will see a better reception when it releases next month in Europe and North America.

As for returning games, Destiny has topped 100,000 units sold for the PS4 version, which isn’t too bad for a Western-developed game. Meanwhile, Pokémon X&Y, Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition and Animal Crossing: New Leaf returned to the Top 20. And Yo-kai Watch 2 can have its average sales from its two version pass the original game if they combine for 35,000 next week — assuming that Yo-kai Watch continues at its 4,000-5,000 pace.

    The best thing Nintendo can do to drive 3DS sales is to keep making games for it. What more can they do? It would probably be best to try out new games and IP, experiment a bit, preferably with genres that aren’t at all well-represented on 3DS right now. It’d be interesting to see them try horror games or perhaps a Platinum-style spectacle fighter (although smaller in scope to fit the 3DS’s weaker hardware). Codename S.T.E.A.M. is a good start, and I’m looking forward to it.
    As for the New 3DS, I think it’s success will hinge largely on the popularity of Amiibo. I can see the NFC feature being a huge selling point if Amiibo really takes off. Aside from that, it’ll really fall to what exclusives they decide to make for them, and whether or not it will be enough to sway the Japanese audience.

    Bayonetta 2’s first-week sales are higher than those of The Wonderful 101 in Japan, despite being sold out for several hours at Amazon Japan. (That tax hike implemented by the Abe regime.) Bayonetta 2’s worldwide sales by the end of this year may reach six digits. The PS Vita port of Fate/stay night Réalta Nua (with no sex scenes and new opening animation by ufotable) is the only other new Japanese game that reaches that week’s sales charts.
