Resogun really looks like a next-gen title. Everything from the detailed, cosmic environments to the on-screen destruction of everything around you, the game shines on next-gen tech. Best of all, the smooth 60 FPS not only is aesthetically-pleasing, but also benefits the sheer speed of gameplay perfectly. And, speaking of perfect, the bumping electronic soundtrack and dynamic sound effects Resogun packs keep you in the moment and on your feet throughout each and every level.

Resogun | Keepers
The vile keepers have an unhealthy obsession with humans…

A fast-paced shmup wouldn’t be enjoyable if it didn’t have a solid set of controls; Resogun has just that. The left analog stick moves your ship around the 2D plane and moving the right analog stick left or right shoots your beam cannons in that direction. The boost, bombs, overdrive, and the throw human commands are all mapped to the four L and R shoulder buttons. It’s simple, comfortable and doesn’t take long to become second nature. That was something that really stuck out to me. With me being partial to arcade cabinets and all, I wasn’t expecting to grow so fond of the controls, but the DualShock 4 controller, surprisingly enough, is now my preferred peripheral.

Resogun | Intense Moment
The fantastic controls hold up even in tense moments.

Housemarque crafted each aspect and mechanic of the game as if it was a puzzle piece. When all of the “puzzle pieces” were placed together, they formed a beautiful picture where every little detail complemented the others. To put it into simple words: Resogun is a masterpiece. It borrowed from games of arcade fame, as well as their previous titles, and improved upon them to form something that’s truly genius. I never thought I’d be playing an arcade shooter in the comfort of my home, but Resogun broke the barrier I had created so many years ago. It’s a joy to play, addictive and I didn’t even have to insert a single quarter. And Housemarque is still supporting the game with updates that expand the amount of content and a full DLC package on the way; I’d say that warrants the $14.99 PSN price tag quite well.
