E3 2014 - Entwined | oprainfall

One of the coolest things about the Sony Press Conference at E3 2014 was the announcement (and immediate release) of Entwined. I debated whether or not I should write about a game that’s already been released during E3, but I realize not all of you would make the $9.99 commitment despite owning a PlayStation 4. Maybe a handful of you wanted to hear more about this game. That’s why I made a point to play through the first two levels, or “lifetimes”, on the show floor. Given that these are meant to be impressions and not a full review, I’ll just spend time touching on the game’s presentation and a few of its basic gameplay elements. Without further ado:

Entwined tells the story of two souls in love that cannot meet. Souls of orange and blue are controlled with each analog stick. The purpose of the game involves guiding each soul through a series of colored gates in order to charge up a connecting bar at the top of the screen. Passing through gates with each soul allows them to grow closer together. If you miss a gate, the soul loses some of its connection. Miss too many, and it’s game over. Still–the game is very forgiving. Entwined is likely meant to be a relaxing experience for the player, given the ambient soundtrack and visuals like what you saw during the conference and below.

After you manage to bring both colored meters together by passing through gates consecutively, the two souls finally meet and combine to form a beautiful green dragon. After that, the controls switch from what they were to using both analog sticks to steer the two connected souls. It plays like the old Spyro the Dragon flying segments, I suppose. Collect colorful crystals, then finish the level by holding X and flying around at your leisure creating a beautiful path of light. The endgame of each “lifetime” is where the game’s beauty truly shines.

Entwined is definitely an experience to consider. I’m sure you’ll hear more from Entwined when we review the full game before long. Until then, take a look at the trailer and decide for yourself! As you know, Entwined is available now on PlayStation 4 for $9.99. It’s coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita a little later on. And it’s cross-buy, so when it does arrive on the other platforms, you’ll already own it if you pick up the PlayStation 4 version today! Check out the official announcement post on the PlayStation Blog to hear more information straight from the game’s Creative Director!
