The results are in for this month’s poll. We asked “Which is Your Favorite Mario Kart?”

These are the results:

I’m a bit surprised to see Double Dash take the top spot. I remember back when it first came out, it got a lot of negative word of mouth for being so different with the two riders per cart. That being said, it was probably my favorite Mario Kart game as well. Maybe Nintendo will revisit the formula? In Second place was Mario Kart 64. Not surprised there. Somewhat surprising though is seeing Mario Kart Wii in third place considering it was the best selling Mario Kart to date.

How so? This kind of sites are mostly visited by fanboys and geeks and they hate everything that is “mainstream”. MKWii is hated not for other reason but because it is mainstream. Even if they like it, they will find a reason (a dumb subjective absurd one) to hate and instead choose the one that sold less.

I had a lot of with the Wii version. Probably my second favorite. Had to use a regular controller though. Couldn’t stand using the motion controls.

    • Sasss

Yeah I can see people hating MKW just because it was mainstream popular. I loved it though and I find 7 and 8 both disappointing comparatively. I don’t know why exactly. I think it is the feel and how not-finicky MKW is. It also had a good balance between racing skill and item usage. Dropping to last place didn’t imply you’d be up to first within a matter of seconds because of how stacked the items are.

    • Giordan

I’ve heard 7 was rushed. Dunno about 8, though.

  • Vinicius

My favorites are probably Super Mario Kart on the SNES, mostly because is the only Mario Kart where both me and my friends have the same skill level (serious every month we make a SMK tournament), and Double Dash it had some of the best Itens, courses and charachters.

  • Giordan

My problem with DD is that the control is twitchy.
Though I’m surprised DS didn’t make it into the top 3.

  • Taiyaki

Nobody cares how popular Mario Kart Wii was, it was a terrible Mario Kart.
What surprises me is how low the first Super Mario Kart ranks despite being arguably the best. It’s one of the only Mario Kart games where skill trumps luck and the CPU treats you with respect not like some baby who needs their hand held till you reach first place.
Double Dash is just awesome, it really deserves that spot, the game was one of the most fun and had the most options, also the all cup tour with two players in the same kart is something no other MK can deliver and is one heck of an experience with a good team mate.

    • Sasss

Can you provide some criticism for being terrible? I googled expecting there to be obvious amounts of flak about it but to no avail.

It’s an old game, honestly a lot of out readers probably haven’t even played it. Our largest demographics is 18-25. The game came out 22 years ago which means a good amount of our readers weren’t even born yet. It’s far more likely Mario Kart 64 or even the Wii version was their first Mario Kart.

I don’t think Super Circuit is the best, but it is most definitely criminally underrated.

My favorite has always been MK64.

  • John Ellis

I’m surprised Mario kart 64 is so high, one of the worst I’ve played in the series.

    • Giordan

You’re definitely in the minority. Many consider it the best in the series. Probably because they have a nostalgic connection to it.

  • Thanatos2k

Double Dash wins because as we’ve seen, it was the only one that actually dared to attempt to move the series forward. Nintendo immediately put the kibosh on that in favor of just more clones of Mario Kart 64, so Mario Kart 64 wins second place being the original that keeps getting rehashed.
