The developers behind upcoming 16-bit indie RPG Elysian Shadows announced today that they have secured a deal with Watermelon Co. to publish the game on the Sega Dreamcast, in addition to Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Ouya. Watermelon Co. should be familiar with the system as they have been working towards porting their own indie RPG (Pier Solar) to the console.

Furthermore, the Elysian Shadows team has received a some initial funding through private investment before their upcoming Kickstarter campaign, which will launch on August 1. As a result, the developers will be able to work full-time on the game before the launch of the Kickstarter campaign.

Elysian Shadows is an indie RPG inspired by games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy, combining modern technology with that era of gaming. Elysian Shadows gets Publishing Deal for Sega Dreamcast and Initial Funding

Elysian Shadows, the indie RPG fusing aspects of 16-bit classics with modern lighting and sound, has secured a publishing deal with Watermelon Co. to bring the game to the Sega Dreamcast. Watermelon, the studio behind Pier Solar for the Sega Genesis, and now Pier Solar HD for the Dreamcast, is committed to producing high-quality physical releases for retro games, complete with jewel cases, instruction manuals, and professionally pressed discs complete with deluxe packaging.

Elysian Shadows, also targeting OUYA, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, just received initial funding through private investment, allowing the developers to work full-time bringing their vision to life before launching a Kickstarter campaign for continued funding. The campaign will launch on August 1st, and would allow the team to fund the game through completion, also bringing it to modern consoles such as the PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PSVita, and 3DS.

About Elysian Shadows

Elysian Shadows is an indie 2D/3D RPG being developed for Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, OUYA and Sega Dreamcast. The game fuses aspects of 16-bit classical RPGs such as Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy, with a highly stylized, modern vision by using dynamic lighting, physics, and audio engines along with swapping between 2D and 3D perspectives.

The team and project are best known for their popular YouTube video blog series, “Adventures in Game Development,” giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Elysian Shadows, and the late nights, blood, sweat, and tears involved with developing an indie game.

Dreamcast? I mean that’s cool and all but for what purpose?

    • Thomas Johnson

There is a large active Dreamcast community, and if they want to get it on a console, it’s probably the cheapest option. Also, the Dreamcast never really stopped getting new games, even after SEGA stopped supporting it, so I think devs just like making games for it.
