Cult County

I have mixed feelings today. On the one hand, I am beyond excited the venerable folks at Renegade Kid are still working on Cult County. I’m okay with the transition to a Kickstarter, even. What I’m less pleased about is the fact that it is no longer set for the 3DS. To the contrary, it now seems they are making it for every console EXCEPT 3DS, including Wii U, XBox One, PS4, PS3, Steam and Vita. Regardless, new games by Jools and Co. are always something to be excited for.

In case you missed our earlier coverage, Cult County is a new FPS horror game in the same vein as Dementium, Dementium 2 and, to a lesser extent, Moon. It focuses on a small west Texas town seething with mystery and terror, and boasts varying types of combat, both melee and firearm. That’s all good and well, but you probably want to sink your teeth in more, am I right? Of course I am!

Players will control Gavin Mellick, who is returning to the small town he grew up in to impart the sad news of his mother’s terminal illness to his sister, Alissa. Cue ominous dust storm, mysterious suicide of the town preacher and a “cultish group” moving into town. Even worse, Gavin keeps seeing ghostly people linger on the fringe of the dust storm, those the townspeople refer to as “Dust Devils”. It’s now up to you to reveal the rotten truth of what is going on in the town, and to save those you love. Intrigued yet? A simple yet effective premise that could lead to a fantastic horror game!

As far as the Kickstarter specifics, each and every backer will get a credit, as well as the chance to vote on key gameplay elements. For choosing the Contributer tier, you get a say in art concepts, NPC character design, story arcs and more. If you really want to make an impact, there is also Enemy Designer tier and another tier to get your face in the game as a character! The tiers start at $5 and go all the way to $10,000, and offer such perks as desktop wallpapers, digital soundtracks, alpha and beta access and hard cover art book. To become a reality, Cult County needs to make $580,000. It’s a big sum, but I have a lot of faith in the Renegade Kid team to deliver.

Oh, and as one final incentive, there are some really cool stretch goals as well. If they get to $640,000 the game will support XBox 360, and for $40,000 less, they release a sweet making of documentary by Dvelop.TV. More goals have yet to be announced, but I have no doubt that will come as the project progresses. For more info, feel free to check out the Kickstarter page itself, and help this great looking game get made! I know I will.
