Unsung Story

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians was originally announced as a mobile game for Android and iOS platforms, but developer Playdek has hinted that the tactical RPG could come to other platforms as well. Speaking to Joystiq, the CEO of developer Playdek Joel Goodman was asked whether cross-platform play would be a sticking point for the possibility of releasing the game on home consoles or PCs.

It potentially could and it potentially couldn’t. We’re not speaking [about] any secrets here, we know for some platforms that will be more feasible to do than on others. At that point, then, we’ll have to look at it and say, well, what’s the more important part here? Is it that we end up with a platform that has a pragmatic community, and we don’t want to do that, or that it’s well worth it because it’s still a gaming community that we want to address and make sure that they get this product as well.

The Unsung Story series of games are the result of a collaboration between the San Diego-based Playdek and tactical RPG veteran Yasumi Matsuno. Matsuno’s portfolio includes classics of the genre like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, as well as RPGs like Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. Playdek has also had experience with mobile platforms adapting board games, so the partnership seems like the perfect fit.

Do you think consoles can provide cross-platform functionality, and which platforms could they be looking into? Cross-platform play has been done before between a single console and PC, but asking consoles to play nice with each other and increasingly competitive mobile platforms may be asking a lot.
