Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - oprainfall

Continuing with their focus on mobile gaming, Square Enix has announced that they will be giving Final Fantasy IV: The After Years a full 3D remake for iOS and Android devices.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy IV and began its life as a game for smartphones when initially released back in 2008, so its next iteration being for mobile devices will likely not surprise many. The title has also been available as WiiWare and as part of Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for PSP.

The game is set 17 years after the events of Final Fantasy IV and follows the adventuring descendants of its predecessor’s cast. It also uses many of the same gameplay mechanics of FFIV, along with a few new ones. One such feature is called Age of the Moon, which influences the party’s physical and magical stats depending on the lunar phase in-game. The After Years also introduced the Band ability, a combo attack that can be used only with the cooperation of multiple party members.

The title is expected to release for both iOS and Android devices this winter.

I wish squarenix would go back to caring about consoles and not so much about mobile. I’m still waiting for Dragon Quest X to be released here it’s been almost 3 yeats now.

    • Pyrotek85

      X? Did you mean IX?

    • smacd

No… pit clearly meant X. The MMO on the Wii/U. IX came out on the DS a long time ago in the west, why would anyone still be waiting for it?

    • Pyrotek85

I was confused because he said 3 years, DQ X was released recently. Either way it didn’t make sense to me lol.

    • Xx_Kares_xX

I agree with most of what you had to say except Dragon Quest X… it’s an mmo and they won’t make the money they need from it for it to survive. I’m actually curious to see how it’s doing in japan considering they LOVE dragon quest but don’t usually care for MMO’s.

Oh Squeenix…how I used to love you….sigh. Please stop making iOS exclusives.

    • smacd

Don’t worry, its not exclusive to iOS. It’ll be on Android too!

I know this game is going to get some snickers. but I love the idea. The After Years is one of the best rpg’s on Wii. The remakes of 3 and 4, also 4 Heroes are really good… and the reason so many of us are salivating for Bravely Default. After FFV got the iOS HD upgrade as opposed to the 3D I was disappointed. Down the line I’d enjoy that upgrade for VI. but for now, I really like the idea of The After Years getting the same treatment. If it sells well you never know what platform it may be ported to. There is reason to hope for Vita, Ouya and 3DS. I like this direction they are going in.

Huh, this one has never had a 3D version has it? So why are they using the graphics engine they used for the DS games instead of something better?

  • multibottler0cket

WHY NOT ON 3DS OR WII U?

The kind of people who will appreciate the depth of a game like this will not only already have one of these systems, but will prefer infinitely to play it on them versus on a buttonless pocket computer.

  • Wyatt

Why hate because it’s mobile? Ios as a platform has as much credibility as the 3ds and vita do, look at infinity blade 3 deus ex the fall,pvz2, worms 3, ffd ios has a bunch of exclusives

    • smacd

I agree. The people who hate on mobile platforms either haven’t played any, or haven’t play any in awhile, since the games started getting a lot better. They feel threatened, and like little children they are afraid of anything new. The reaction of hatred is knee-jerk and baseless at this point. I have no problem with those people missing out on the great games on mobile platforms. Maybe one day their mommy will finally get them a phone or tablet that can play those games, and they will stop hating.

Eh, their are still real problems with mobile platforms. Lack of physical controls is always annoying, and on android device compatibility is not universal. I purchased FF Dimensions a while ago when it was on sale, figured I’d install it on my 2nd generation Nexus 7 Tablet, and got nothing but errors. Eventually got it to work, but still a hassle. I’ll still get mobile games, but certainly prefer games on dedicated gaming machines.

Seriously? You couldn’t have replied after getting off your high horse? You don’t know every reason behind why people may not like mobile platforms because everyone thinks and feels differently so don’t presume to speak for everyone when you are not them.

  • Tobal

How about this 3d remake and that of FFIV on 3DS???

  • matteo zorzi

its was THE WORST final fantasy ever!!! its not even a full story!!! these are like lots of small quests separeated from each other!!! it sucks.

  • RagunaXL

the video looks awesome! like bravely default for your smartphone…. or ipod or ipad, for all you smartphone haters!

  • Thedude3445

Wow, I can’t say that I’ve ever been angry that the 3DS has ever gotten shafted in getting games. Wii U, sure, but never the 3DS… Until now. Surely Square isn’t that stupid.
