Madman Entertainment has announced their acquisition of one of Studio Ghibli’s newest films, The Wind Rises (also known by its Japanese title, Kaze Tachinu). The movie will premiere in theaters around Australia and New Zealand in 2014.

The Wind Rises is a bittersweet film for many Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki fans. On the one hand, it fully showcases Ghibli’s well-known aesthetic and Miyazaki’s trademark storytelling methods, guaranteeing an enjoyable film for longtime Ghibli viewers. However, it’s been announced that The Wind Rises is Miyazaki’s last film before his retirement from the film industry, meaning that the movie marks an end to a long and illustrious career.

The Wind Rises is a fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft used in World War II. It follows the story of his life and work as an engineer, chronicling many major events in Japanese history along the way. The story was also inspired and influenced by the novel The Wind Has Risen by Tatsuo Hori. Disney has acquired the rights to the film in North America.
