Steel Empire 3DS: FEATURED

Being one of a handful who had the Sega Channel in my youth has introduced me to tons of Genesis games that have either been forgotten over time or have turned into refined classics said to define the 16 bit era in a number of ways. I’m telling you all about Steel Empire, not only because it managed to slip my radar despite having access to fifty games per month back in the day, but because…it really makes me nostalgic for Arrow Flash, a game I loved that spins from a similar thread.

Here’s a look at how things were. For past examples, indeed refer to Arrow Flash, or Gradius and its many sequels over the years. For modern twists on the same genre, well…that new Mii Force game seems similar to it. At any rate, I’ll cut to the chase: Steel Empire, formerly on the Genesis and on the Game Boy Advance (that release was limited to Japan and Europe), is headed to the 3DS. It’ll be a remastered port—one that features improved graphics and more balanced difficulty.

Those in Japan (or who imported a 3DS from Japan) can expect this game in December 2013. Those awaiting news in the West—be optimistic. If Nintendo is willing to bring Summer Carnival ’92: RECCA to the West, I think just about anything’s possible. Here’s a look at a playthrough of the old game. And just because I can, I put Arrow Flash side by side with it. Here’s to hoping.
