Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians

For Wii U owners out there who have long since completed Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2 and are looking for a new game to scratch that rhythm itch, the wait may soon be over. Though an official announcement hasn’t dropped yet, confirmation that Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians will be getting a Wii U eShop release comes to us via an interview between Nintendo Life and developer THREAKS.

Beatbuddy is billed as a “music action-adventure” that tasks the player with guiding the titular character through the land of Symphonia on a mission to save his sisters, Melody and Harmony, and his own powers of immortality from the dastardly Prince Maestro. Gameplay revolves around navigating increasingly complex stages by syncing movement and combat to the beat of the music. All this comes together across six gorgeous hand-drawn levels, each divided into five chapters.

Of course, the most crucial part of any rhythm game is quality of the tunes on offer, and Beatbuddy is no slouch in that department. It boasts tracks from Sabrepulse, La Rochelle Band, and even Austin Wintory, the Grammy-nominated composer of Journey. But don’t expect to just sit back and enjoy the music. Every player interaction with the world changes the soundtrack ever so slightly, altering volume, tempo, and instrumentation as puzzles are solved and enemies are defeated.

Take a look at this hilarious trailer for the PC version of Beatbuddy to get a feel for its beautiful visuals and catchy tunes.

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is currently available for PC through Steam. Nintendo is expected to officially announce a Wii U version this week during GDC Europe.
