Super Smash Bros.

The Nintendo Press Conference was full of surprises, especially for the Wii U and 3DS installments of Super Smash Bros., a game that had already received a couple of new characters, including the Animal Crossing villager and Mega Man, both of which were shown at the Nintendo Direct. What we now know is that among these previously announced characters, there was one new character that caught all of us by surprise.

Wii Fit Trainer Super Smash Bros.

Yes, you read that right. The Wii Fit Trainer will now be appearing in both the Wii U and 3DS Super Smash Bros. games. Her moves are reported to be fitness-based, which is exactly what I would have expected from the Wii Fit Trainer. I am currently not sure if this is a girl power moment or a facepalm moment, but I will leave it up to you to decide.

I was hyped for Megaman, but this is something else.

  • I’m welcoming this news with open arms. Smash needs more female fighters.

    • Rick Xeros

Sure, but Wii Fit trainer? Isn’t that kind of… random?

    • Nathaniel Brownson

How could it be random? Wii Fit has been the best-selling Nintendo game of the past eighteen years.

Besides,The smart game developer perspective isn’t that you want your audiences totally segregated but you actually want to expand them. You know, to make more money.

They already know they have sales from the ~hardcore~ gamers.

Putting the Wii Fit character in is sort of a way to welcome new players out of the main player base. Sometimes you just need something familiar to help you get into something new, especially when there’s pressure on you that it’s not “supposed to be for you”

    • Rick Xeros

Okay, first of all, I think you are WAY over thinking it. I just found it a very odd choice, to me it does seem random. Out of nowhere. I don’t ultimately have anything wrong with it, other than the character feels out of place in the game. Its kind of like playing one of the fighting polygons but… wacky

I don’t really see how Wii Fit trainer is supposed to “welcome” outsiders to SSB and honestly don’t think that was the intent. (could be wrong) When you get down to it adding her is similar to adding ROB, she seems out of place in a fighting game but that’s the wacky fun of Smash Brothers. My comment at the time was reactionary rather than properly thought out, I’ll admit but I don’t know if I agree with your analysis on the subject.

      Random = awesome.
This is exactly the kind of mindless randomness I want to be there in Smash!

  • Mielmo

I like what I see of her so far. Also happy because a new female smasher

  • Ross MacPherson

As long as her final smash involves bashing in Mario’s head with a giant Balance Board, I’m in.

  • Rick Xeros

    Um… Lame :/

  • John Ellis

If you want more female characters how about seeing if Vanillaware is willing to have Momohime appear in the game, that would be awesome beyond belief.

  • Roderick Sykes

From Villager and Megaman to Wii Fit Girl…

    Well that escalated quickly

  • James Best

This is one of those so stupid it’s hilarious moments.

  • Come on now

Scraping the bottom of the barrel now? What next, a Mii with a Tennis racket from Wii Sports?

  • Ashitaka

Liked Villager, loved Mega Man…but then they did this. Are they f**king serious here?

  • Colin

I can’t be the only one who thinks that Lucina (Fire Emblem Awakening) would have been a better new female smasher, can I?

  • Stratos

I hope to have some of these characters, even as Assist Trophies:

    John Raimi (Geist)

Alexandra Roivas (Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem)

    Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles)

    Zael (The Last Story)

    Aeron (Pandora’s Tower)

    Black Shadow (F-Zero series)

    Mike Anderson (Battle Clash)

    Bomberman (Bomberman series)

    Captain Rainbow (Captain Rainbow)
