If you’ve been keeping up with news regarding Nippon Ichi’s Zillions of Enemy X, you’ll already know the basics: how it utilizes a turn-based battle system that’s part card game, part strategy RPG, and takes place in a future where the Earth is overrun with zillions of enemies. If you’re curious, you can read more about the gameplay and the backstory right here at oprainfall.

Regardless of whether or not you’ve read up on Zillions of Enemy X, you can actually test out the battle system for yourself right from home. A free demo is available on the game’s official website. If you’re looking to give it a go, just follow that link and then find this graphic on the front page:

From there, you’ll be led on a Japanese walkthrough of the game’s card battle system.

It starts off by showing you how to choose a monster and send it out on the field. You have six cards in your hand, and three slots for them on the field. The demo has you choose one card in particular to start, but later you can fill the other two spots in with monsters of your choosing. You’re faced with three monsters from the opponent’s side.

The numbers to the left on each monster are their LP  (life points), and the number to the right is the amount of damage they can do to an opponent.

When you click on a monster initially, you have two options. The first is to summon them to the field; the second is to dispose of that monster and recycle its LP and PP by distributing them to another monster. Your only option this first time around is to summon them to the field.

From there, you can click on your chosen monster to bring up a menu. Choose the Attack option (the first on the list) and then choose a monster from the enemy side, and bam- you just had your first Zillions of Enemy X victory. To end your turn, click on the sub menu to the right side of the screen and choose End Turn (the first on the list again). From here, it’s up to you to finish things off.

Placing more than one monster on the field together gives you an attack bonus. Filling in the empty slots on the field also protects the player from direct hits.

Other options on the cards include:

  • Skill: Use a monster’s special skill
  • Delete: Remove a monster from the field

Other options on the sub menu include:

  • Refresh: Toss away your current hand for a new one
  • The ability to switch your LP and SP
  • Check the trash (your discard pile)

These options aren’t functional in the demo.

Zillions of Enemy X will be available for PlayStation 3 consoles in Japan on May 23.
