All you dudes and dudettes out there that have a love for Nippon Ichi Software and their lovable Disgaea mascot, the Prinny, now have a soccer team to cheer for! As of today, in a weird turn of events, Nippon Ichi’s president, Sohei Niikawa, along with a Prinny, presided over a business meeting that ended with the software developer becoming the official sponsor of the F.C. Gifu soccer team.
For those who know about Nippon Ichi Software, this acquisition might not come as a complete surprise, as the deal could be more of a show of hometown pride than a calculated business venture. The F.C. Gifu team are the soccer stars of Gifu, a prefecture in the middle of Japan, the same area which also houses Nippon Ichi Software’s headquarters.
This news of the F.C. Gifu team’s acquisition came with a flood of images showing Prinnies playing soccer, some of which don’t seem to be necessarily good at it.
In the Disgaea universe, the Prinnies are cotton-stuffed penguins that house the spirits of sinful humans after they have died. They are meant to be the cheap labor force that does the dirty work for demons and angels, and, because their goal is to make enough money to pay for their reincarnation, they are at the mercy of being constantly exploited. Prinnies are well-known for their surfer style linguistics since they constantly say the phrase “dood,” as well as their seemingly combustible genetic makeup, because simply picking them up and throwing them will always cause them to violently explode.
