Final Fantasy VIII will see a PC release as announced by Famitsu. The announcement also made it clear that this will not be the same game we saw released on the PlayStation in 1999 and on PC in 2000. It’s confirmed that the update will be high definition, but at this point, there is no news on any other additional features that will be added (although¬†additional¬†features are likely). It is also unclear whether or not this re-release will make it anywhere outside of Japan.

However, Famitsu did feature some screenshots of the high definition revamp of the Final Fantasy VIII:

Let’s hope it uses the original soundfont (psf format) and NOT the horrible PC music. Graphically, the PC version was far superior (smoother animations and framerate), but the soundtrack was poorly emulated back in 1999 for the PC. Hopefully, like the PC version of Final Fantasy 7, the soundtrack can be replaced by the original.

I’m cool with my PSN copy. But cool. FF8 is a game i need to beat.

  • Now for a release of FFVII, VIII, and IX in HD on the PS3 and/or 4

  • And not a fuck was given that day.

  • Lets see how long the can continue screwing over their console fans before we give up on em. They got one move I hope they don’t mess it up =/

    Spoony’s shaking in bed.

  • The one positive thing I can think about this is that if the pattern holds, then there may be an HD IX on the horizon.

I doubt it to be honest, VII and VIII were released previously on the PC (and those screenshots are “OH SO HD (IE running at a higher res like FFVII rerelease…)” Whereas FFIX was not released on PC. I’d love to see it, but I’m not holding my breath.

  • My original experience with FFVIII was actually the PC version. I’d be interested to see what this upgraded version is like.

  • …Whatever.

  • Who cares if the lines between the characters and the backgrounds are smoother? How about a graphical overhaul?

  • Great news for the fans but i’m done with 8, finished too many times.

When the original FFVIII PC port was done, it had 640×480 support (which means all the backgrounds and movies were re-rendered at about 2 times the linear resolution of the PSX version. You had the option to switch between the 2 resolutions on the PC version. These screenshots only appear to have the 640×480 backgrounds scaled up while using a higher resolution for the 3D model renderings with the same texture resolution and polygon count. (Just look at the infirmary scene shot and note the blocky backgrounds.)

In other words, this is no more “HD” than the original PC release (although better than the PSX release). The higher render resolution should make the battles look a bit crisper, but overall it appears to be the same effect as the PC re-release of VII.
