Following up on Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (which was the sixth in the series), Aksys Games is bringing us yet another otome game: Sweet Fuse: At Your Side for the PlayStation Portable. The game was developed by Idea Factory, and from what was described almost two years ago, it seems to boast quite an eccentric cast, puzzles that look to rival 999 & Zero Escape’s,  and an engaging plot that is sure to please those who have a palate for visual novels and are just starving for more. Check out Sweet Fuse: At Your Side’s official website for more details!

Aksys yet again taking more risks with releasing a PSP game this late in the console’s life, but hey, appreciate it and love them for it. The handheld is still alive in Japan and they don’t want to leave some potential overseas sales just because of a few downers. As a fan of visual novels myself, Hakuoki was quite a welcome surprise with merit to boot. With XSEED’s localization of Corpse Party being such a success (even having its sequel localized), visual novels of any kind have an auspicious time to further burst on the Western scene. Times have certainly changed.

Story Summary

Saki Inafune, niece to legendary game developer Keiji Inafune, can’t wait to visit her uncle’s new theme park. She’s been invited to the opening day ceremonies, and is looking forward to a day of fun and excitement when suddenly Count Hogstein—a villain as corpulent and cliché as he is evil—blows up the Ferris wheel, takes the park management hostage, and declares the beginning of a deadly series of games.

Desperate to save her uncle, Saki volunteers to be one of the participants in Hogstein’s games, and finds herself thrust into the midst of excitement very different from what she’d expected when she woke up that morning. She’ll need all of her cunning, determination, and exceptional insight to get herself and her fellow participants—all available bachelors—out alive and maybe, with a little luck, find love along the way.

Sounds like an Ever 17/999 mashup.

The Zero Escape games have me primed to try more visual novels. I can’t help but wish that Aksys was putting them out for platforms I’m invested in. Good news for PSP owners though. =) EDIT: I forgot! Vita owners will be able to enjoy this too.

Then again, jumping in at the 7th entry would be kind of awkward, no? I don’t think Virtue’s Last Reward would have been nearly as enjoyable without having played 999 first. I can’t imagine jumping in 7 games into the series unless these stories are more self-contained than the Zero escape ones.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Aksys could be convinced to port 999 to 3DS, iOS, Android, and Vita. It might be tricky, but it could work if they simulated two screens by splitting them horizontally. I’m all for exclusives, but given that the DS is pretty much done it’s not like it’s going to do Nintendo any good. The game’s so great, I’d like it to have as wide a potential audience as possible.
