Aksys announced today that they will be bringing Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi for the PSP to North America. This will be the second game in Idea Factory’s Hakuoki series that Aksys localises, though unlike Demon of the Fleeting Blossom this will not be a visual novel. Warriors of the Shinsengumi will feature “cut-‘em-down action” akin to the Dynasty Warriors series whilst still adhering to the narrative focus of the Hakuoki franchise, with two major storylines to play through. One will follow the events of the previous game, letting you experience the story’s major battles as one of the six main shinsengumi characters such as Saito and Hijikata. The second storyline, called Shinsengumi Chronicle, ads a nice twist by allowing the player to “change history” in an alternative universe adjacent to the original plot.

Some of the other features present in the game include a Fury Mode, which your character will enter when you run out of life. After entering this mode your character will become a raging machine of death, obliterating all who stand in your way, but do not mistake this for some kind of easy-mode. Entering Fury Mode too many times will reward you with a certain bad ending; an interesting way of creating incentive to not die, and fitting of the narrative nature of the game.
