Independent game studio Re-Logic is taking its critically acclaimed action-adventure RPG Terraria to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.  Originally released for PC on May 16th, 2011, the indie side-scroller is planning to have new exclusive content when it makes the jump to the consoles.

Terraria draws inspiration from games like Minecraft – with its emphasis on resource gathering and building – and Metroid – with its similar emphasis on exploration and adventure.  It also has features unique to the game where specialized NPCs will inhabit your buildings after you complete certain objectives.  The game also comes with three difficulty levels, the hardest of which has your character gone permanently if you die.

Many people are excited about this development, including Andrew Spinks, creator of Terraria.  From the press release:

Andrew Spinks, creator of Terraria added “I can’t say how excited I am to finally have Terraria come to Xbox 360 and PlayStation3! To see it come so far is a complete shock, especially after such humble beginnings. It’s always been my dream to have as many people as possible know and enjoy Terraria as much as I have, and this is another big step in that direction! It’s been awesome working with 505 Games, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the additional features that they’ve been able to bring to this new edition of the game.”

Terraria is available through Steam.  The game has already sold 1.6 million copies and was the best-selling game on Steam in its first week.  The PSN and XBLA versions are expected in 2013.
