In June, Sega announced a new browser based free-to-play game called Valkyria Chronicles Duel, which is based on the Valkyria Chronicles series of strategy RPG games. The browser based version is set to release in Japan July 26, with the iOS and Android version to release in August.

Now I’m sure many of you Valkyria Chronicles fans are put off by this (including myself), but Valkyria Chronicles Duel seems to be pretty worth your while. Instead of just doing a simple 1 vs. 1 Trading Card game like other series have done, Valkyria Duel is packed with interesting features. Players have access to base training camps, taking over enemy territories with a full map interface, actual 3D animated battles during duels, new and old animated cut scenes from the Valkyria Chronicles universe, and over 200 characters cards (which all look amazing) to choose from with all their own special abilities and attributes. And if that’s not enough, it’s also free-to-play! But there will be micro-transactions for items and (most likely) character card packs.

So, of course I would love a brand NEW Valkyria Chronicles game for consoles, but at least this is something …right? …Right?

At least Sega and NHN’s Han Games seem to have put a lot of effort into this game because it could have been a lot worse. I actually wouldn’t mind playing this game.  Trading card games are always fun, and having full 3D animated battles is a nice touch.

I can see that Sega is trying to get into the trading card scene in Japan, which is fine. I just hope future Valkyria Chronicles games will be more than just trading card games and hopefully come back to the kind of game we all fell in love with in the first place.
